American Football, le groupe emo emblématique du Midwest originaire de l’Illinois, se produira pour la toute première fois en Belgique le 23 juin 2026 à La Madeleine à Bruxelles. Connu pour ses guitares scintillantes, ses rythmes complexes et ses compositions profondément introspectives, leur musique a défini un genre et influencé des générations !
Avant de connaître une reconnaissance mondiale en tant que figure emblématique du sous-genre « Midwest Emo », American Football était un humble groupe de rock indépendant basé à l’Université de l’Illinois, dirigé par Mike Kinsella (batteur fondateur de Cap’n Jazz devenu chanteur et guitariste), accompagné de Steve Holmes (guitare) et Steve Lamos (batterie / trompette).
À l’approche de la fin des études universitaires et de l’âge adulte, le groupe prit congé avec un album éponyme, sorti en septembre 1999 sur le label Polyvinyl Record Co. Au cours des quinze années suivantes, le bouche-à-oreille, les forums, les mixtapes, les CD gravés et le partage de fichiers naissant transformèrent ce groupe initialement obscur — avec une simple maison en couverture de leur unique album — en une véritable légende du rock’n’roll.
En 2014, répondant à l’appel d’une communauté croissante de fans dévoués, American Football se reforma et reçut un accueil international. Avec l’ajout du bassiste / multi-instrumentiste et cousin Nate Kinsella, le quatuor a depuis sorti deux autres albums éponymes en 2016 et 2019, tout en faisant évoluer naturellement leur son intemporel vers des influences post-rock, post-punk et plus expérimentales.
Le groupe a collaboré avec des pairs et des fans admirés, tels que Hayley Williams (Paramore), Rachel Goswell (Slowdive) et Ethel Cain. Considéré comme l’un des artistes les plus importants de sa génération, American Football a été salué par Alternative Press, The FADER, GQ, The Guardian, NME, NPR Music, KEXP, Vulture, Rolling Stone, et bien d’autres.
Au cours des deux dernières années, le groupe a célébré le 25ᵉ anniversaire de son album éponyme — communément appelé « LP1 » — en entreprenant une tournée mondiale complète, tous billets vendus. American Football, the iconic Midwest emo band from Illinois, are coming to Belgium for the very first time on June 23, 2026 at La Madeleine in Brussels. Known for their shimmering guitars, intricate rhythms, and deeply introspective songwriting, their music has defined a genre and influenced generations.
Before attaining global recognition as a defining pillar of the “Midwest Emo” sub-genre, American Football was a humble University of Illinois-based indie rock band led by Mike Kinsella (founding Cap’n Jazz drummer-turned- vocalist-and-guitarist) along with Steve Holmes (guitar) and Steve Lamos (drums / trumpet).
With college graduation and adulthood approaching, the band’s farewell came as a self-titled album released in September 1999 on Polyvinyl Record Co. Over the next fifteen years, word of mouth, message boards, mixtapes, burned CDs, and early file sharing turned this otherwise obscure band—with a plain house on their only album cover—into a rock and roll legend.
In 2014, answering the call from a growing legion of dedicated fans, American Football would reunite to international acclaim. With the addition of bassist/multi-instrumentalist and cousin Nate Kinsella, the quartet has since released two additional self-titled records in 2016 and 2019, while steering a natural evolution in their evergreen sound towards post-rock, post-punk, and more experimental influences.
They’ve collaborated with admired peers and fans, including Hayley Williams (Paramore), Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), and Ethel Cain.
