Café Tacvba is the most popular alternative rock band in Mexico and one of the most influential alternative bands in Latin America. Cafe Tacvba is the figurehead of a non-conformist movement in the music world, combining rock, Mexican folk, electronic music and punk. The group has been around for over 30 years and has a very large, loyal fan base across America, Europe and on other continents, and they are still growing.
Every Cafe Tacvba album is different. Each studio album is based on a clear artistic vision, from the type of songs and the instruments used to the people they work with to the cover design (which they usually do themselves). With each album, the band seems to reinvent itself: debut album Re (1994) stood out because of its many genres and sudden changes in style (which led to it being compared to The Beatles' 'White Album'), on cover album Avalancha de Éxitos (1996) they gave their own interpretation of Latin-American classics, on double album Revés/YoSoy (1999) they experimented with electronic music. This was followed by an album of chunky post-punk rock, Cuatro Caminos (2003, with Beck drummers Victor Indrizzo and Joey Waronker), Si No (2007) breathes classic rock, El objeto antes llamado disco (2012) is an album of introspective lyrics. In 2017 they released Jei Beibi, on which the band members experimented a lot with the chords and also during the mixing. Their most recent album, Un Segundo MTV Unplugged, is a tribute to the most iconic songs of their 30-year career. Stars such as David Byrne and Gustavo Santaolalla sing along on the album and have adapted songs for it.
They are a brilliant live band and that is because of their DNA: the band originated as a live act, gathered a loyal fan base and played a lot of gigs. This allowed the band members to refine their music before recording a single song.
Cafe Tacvba has won several awards: a GRAMMY for "Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album" (Cuatro Caminos), a Latin GRAMMY for "Best Rock Album" (Revés/YoSoy), a Latin GRAMMY in the category "Best Alternative Album" (Cuatro Caminos), the Latin GRAMMY for "Best Rock Song" (twice, for Eres and for Esta Vez), a Latin GRAMMY for "Best Alternative Song" (Volver a Comenzar). Their music videos have also been awarded several times: with the MTV Legend Award (2009), the Latin GRAMMY in the "Best Long Music Video" category for Un Viaje (2006) and also with several MTV Viewer's Choice Awards and Premio Lo Nuestro Awards. In 2015, they received the Icon Award at the La Musa Awards, an event organised by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.
